Tohu koorero

MEANING BEHIND OUR TOHU

This tohu symbolises our kaitiaki Kaiwhare. A reminder of our role and responsibility as guardians, and as people of the water

The wings of the whai wrap around Te Manukanuka o Hoturoa and Waitemata with Te Puaha o Waikato and Te Moana o Rehua through its mouth. The mouth is adorned with mangopare as an ode to our resilience, our strength and our commitment to protecting our taiao, our tikanga and most importantly, our tamariki.

The tail is adorned with our ancestral mountains, symbols of our taatai whakapapa to Mataoho and an acknowledgment of our whakapapa to:

Ohomairangi (Nga Oho)

Poutuukeka

Whatuturoto (Nga iwi)

Huakaiwaka (Waiohua)

Huatau

Te Ata i Rehia (Ngaati Te Ata Waiohua)

“Ka whiti te ra ki tua o Rehua, ka ara a Kaiwhare i te rua”

“As long as the sun shines from the east to the west coast, Ngaati Te Ata will rise from the depths of the Manukau harbour.”
